On Hip-hop, Post-Charleston

As the number of African-Americans killed mounts in America, I looked at its impact on musical expression.

Hip-hop’s contradictions — excess, protest, racial binaries and divergent influences — need to be understood in the lens of a nation where an Indian-American Republican governor (South Carolina’s Nikki Haley) can mourn murdered African-Americans under a Confederate flag, which still flies in the state. Post racial, we’re not. I apprise the future as well.
